The Versatile Web Browsers

Your web browser is the tool that "reads" web pages and displays them on your computer's monitor. For on-line courses, you will need to use:

WebCT 3.7 (used during fall 2002)

  • Netscape 4.76 and 6.2.1 (PC & Mac)
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 to 6.0, except 5.5 Service Pack 1 (PC)
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 (Mac OS 9.x)
  • Internet Explorer 5.1 (Mac OS 10.1)
  • AOL 7.0 (PC & Mac) - AOL 7.0 does not work with WebCT's Chat and Whiteboard.

WebCT 3.8 (scheduled for use spring 2003)

  • Netscape 4.76, 6.2.1, 6.2.2, and 6.2.3 (PC & Mac)
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 to 6.0, except 5.5 Service Pack 1 (PC)
  • Internet Explorer 5.0 and 5.1 (Mac OS 9.x)
  • Internet Explorer 5.1 (Mac OS 10.1)
  • AOL 7.0 (PC & Mac)

Make certain that, whichever browser you choose, it is Java and JavaScript enabled. This usually requires checking a box or choosing this capacity in an options box under the tools or properties menu. WebCT maintains a browser tune-up page with complete directions on making your browser work well with WebCT. The RODP currently (fall) uses WebCT version 3.7. WebCT version 3.8 will be used beginning spring 2003.

What if you're an AOL user?

You can still access the courses, but you can't do it with AOL's browser. You need to have Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator on your system, log on with AOL, minimize (not close) the window, and then open Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator and enter the correct URL (http://webct.rodp.org).

Remember, the best way to access the courses is to run AOL in the background and use Internet Explorer.

More AOL  information...

Even though America Online (AOL) is not a browser, it is also best to use the most recent version. As of press time, the most recent version is: AOL 7.0 for Windows 9x and 2000

Also, please note that many of our users have had great success using an external browser - one of the above (note: AOL suggests browsers above 4.0) - while logged onto AOL as an ISP. To get to this external browser:

  1. First, sign on to AOL, but do NOT click "go to the web."
  2. Minimize the AOL window (there is probably a small icon in the upper right corner of your AOL window which will allow you to minimize it).
  3. Now go to the "Start" menu of your computer, select "Programs", and select "Internet Explorer" or "Netscape Communicator." This will open up a new, "external" browser.
  4. When you open up the browser, type the web address of your school's online campus into the address bar and click the "enter" key on your keyboard.
  5. Login as usual.

You will want to access your courses this way each time to avoid many problems.

Since you will not be using AOL's browser, you will need to go back to AOL every 30 minutes or so and do something to "remind" AOL that you are there. This can be something as minor as checking your email. If you do not do this, AOL will sign you off after 45 minutes.
