Course Description: |
Spanish for Healthcare Professionals is a course
designed to enable healthcare professionals to
communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking
individuals. It is intended for those who know
little or no Spanish.
|
|
Course Objectives: |
Students will learn the following:
1. Basic Spanish words and phrases related to
health care, including one's health, the body,
illness, emergency situations, tests and
procedures, how one is feeling, food and
nutrition, sex, pregnancy, sexually transmitted
diseases, family, drugs and alcoholism.
2. How to give Commands
3. How to ask questions using interrogatives
4. Basic grammar concepts and punctuation
5. Important cultural information and "Spanglish"
6. Students will practice speaking Spanish in
order to become comfortable with using it on a
daily basis. Practice makes better!!!!

Prerequisites and Corequisites: |
There are no prerequisites for this course.
Students need to be motivated to learn Spanish,
have a desire to practice what they are
learning, and be willing to learn from their
mistakes. Fluency in Spanish should not be
expected upon completion of this course, as it
is not imperative that one be fluent in order to
communicate effectively.

Course topics will consist of the following:
1. Spanish "basics" including pronunciation, the
alphabet, vowels, accents, gender and number of
words, greetings and salutations, days of the
week, months of the year, the weather, numbers
and giving phone numbers.

4. Food and Nutrition
5. Telling time
6. Common Commands for the Examining Room
7. The Hospital
8. Tests and Procedures
9. The Emergency Room
10. Drugs and Alcoholism
11. Pregnancy, Prenatal and Postnatal care
12. Chronic Illnesses, Cancer, AIDS and Other
Sexually Transmitted Diseases
13. Grammar points needed to understand topics
and to communicate effecitvely

Testing Procedures:
|
All tests (including the final exam) and quizzes
will be administered online via WebCT.
|

Grading Procedure:
|
Students must maintain a 75% average in the
course in order to pass the course and receive
the C.E.U. credits for the course.
|

The grading scale should emphasize assignments,
projects, and student participation in the
learning community as well as timed quizzes and
periodic examinations.

A sequenced list of assignments and projects
arranged by course section or module with due
dates if applicable.

Class Participation:
|
It is imperative that students participate in
all interactive aspects of the course. Students
are expected to communicate with other students
in threaded discussions, and students are
required to communicate with the instructor as a
learning resource. Students must check the
course frequently for announcements.

|
Punctuality:
|
As the course activities follow a weekly
schedule, students are expected to stay current
with the course calendar. Assignments are to be
completed by their respective due dates in order
to receive credit.

Course Ground Rules |
All students are expected to actively
participate in the course, communicating with
other students and the instructor. It is
expected that all students learn how to use
WebCT (technical problems are to be addressed
immediately). Students are responsible for
checking the course frequently, keeping up with
the calendar, and completing course assignments
on time.

Guidelines for Communications |

Always include a subject line.

Remember without facial expressions some
comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful
in wording your emails. Use of emoticons might
be helpful in some cases.

Use standard fonts.

Do not send large attachments without
permission.

Special formatting such as centering, audio
messages, tables, html, etc. should be avoided
unless necessary to complete an assignment or
other communication.

Respect the privacy of other class members

Discussion Groups:

Review the discussion threads thoroughly before
entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a
discussant.

Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply"
button rather starting a new topic.

Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements
to other members of the discussion group. Be
respectful of other’s ideas.

Be patient and read the comments of other group
members thoroughly before entering your remarks.

Be cooperative with group leaders in completing
assigned tasks.

Be positive and constructive in group
discussions.

Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.

chat session.

Be polite. Choose your words carefully. Do not
use derogatory statements.

The
Tennessee Virtual Library is available to
all students enrolled in the Regents Degree
Program. Links to library materials (such as
electronic journals, databases, interlibrary
loans, digital reserves, dictionaries,
encyclopedias, maps, and librarian support) and
Internet resources needed by learners to
complete online assignments and as background
reading must be included in all courses.

The instructor reserves the left to make changes
as necessary to this syllabus. If changes are
necessitated during the term of the course, the
