Course Information

Course Description:

A comprehensive analysis of concepts required for effective performance as a preceptor in a healthcare setting.  The course is designed to be a meaningful guide for the preceptor of a BSN or MSN Nursing student.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course the student will be able to:

1. Discuss the roles and responsibilities of a preceptor.

2. Analyze the differences between a Preceptor, Mentor, and Educator.

3. Communicate orally to colleagues how you would use the principles of adult education with the preceptee.

4. Critique potential legal issues and concerns of a preceptor.

5. Apply the process for evaluation of a preceptee performance.

3. Principles of Adult Education

4. Legal issues and concerns

5. Evaluation process

Specific Course Requirements:

The student should do the following: 1. Please read your course syllabus, become familiar with WebCT and your textbook, read and complete your first assignment. 2. Send your name, email address and telephone number to your instructor during the first week of class. Please read the instructor contact information. 3. Start a notebook. In your notebook you should keep a copy of the materials you print for the course as well as each of the assignments you submit. This will be very useful for you as a future reference.  4. Check your virus protection. 5. Please print your calendar. This will give you the due dates for your assignments. 6. Email messages should be sent through the WebCT mail unless it is temporarily unavailable. 7. Be prepared for technical difficulties, illnesses and other circumstances that might cause your work to be late. Always plan to submit your work at least two or three days before the due date to allow yourself time to deal with any problems that could develop. 8. Include your course and section number (if applicable) on all assignments. 9. Please complete each assignment by the due date. All assignments must be completed using MS Word and must be online. 10. Please feel free to contact your instructor if you have any questions. Your instructor is your coach, facilitator, and mentor during the course.

The grading scale reflects all student participation in group discussions, assignments, and punctuality in completion of assignments.

 

Assignments and Participation

Assignments and Projects:

Assignments are listed in the Assignment section of this course. Assignments should be completed by the due date on the calendar and per the instructions for the assignment. Some of the assignments will be group discussions and other assignments will be student papers.

Class Participation:

All students are expected to actively participate in online class discussions. Each discussion question posted will be assigned a date by which the student must respond. If a student is unable to fulfill this requirement for any reason, he/she should notify the instructor prior to the class and make alternative arrangements.  The aim is to encourage interaction among students and faculty, not simply to present information.  Students are required to respond to all discussion questions. Student responses to discussion questions must be substantive, thoughtful, and analytical. The student is held to academic standards of the use of proper grammar, punctuation, and spelling.        

Punctuality:

Students are expected to:

1. Check the course calendar for the due dates of assignments

2. Check the course bulletin board frequently for announcements

3.Late assignments will be accepted, but it will be noted that the assignment was tardy.   

Course Ground Rules

The student is expected to:  learn how to navigate in the WebCT  system, keep abreast of course announcements , participate by responding to all discussion questions, keep abreast of course announcements, use the assigned college or university e-mail address as opposed to a personal e-mail address, address technical problems immediately, and observe course netiquette at all times and contact the instructor if unclear about assignment expectations . 

Guidelines for Communications

Email:

  • Always include a subject line.
  • Remember, without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your emails. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases.
  • Use standard fonts.
  • Do not send large attachments without permission.
  • Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc., should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication.
  • Respect the privacy of other class members.

Discussion Groups:

  • Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant.
  • Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic.
  • Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of others' ideas.
  • Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks.
  • Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks.
  • Be positive and constructive in group discussions.
  • Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.

Chat:

  • Introduce yourself to the other learners in the chat session.
  • Be polite. Choose your words carefully. Do not use derogatory statements.
  • Be concise in responding to others in the chat session.
  • Be prepared to open the chat session at the scheduled time.
  • Be constructive in your comments and suggestions.

The Tennessee Virtual Library is available to all students enrolled in the Regents Online Continuing Education Program. Links to library materials (such as electronic journals, databases, interlibrary loans, digital reserves, dictionaries, encyclopedias, maps, and librarian support) and Internet resources needed by learners to complete online assignments and as background reading must be included in all courses.
