Course Description: |
| This course is designed to provide a basic knowledge and overview of the Office Administration Section of the Certified Professional Secretary (CPS) Examination. |
Course Objectives: |
| This course to help the student prepare to take the CPS Exam by providing the student with information that is the foundation for the exam and includes tests, handout materials, discussion groups, and a mock CPS examination at the end of the three sections of the course. |
| Course Topics: |
| The Office Administration course covers records management, oral and written communications, oral presentations, meetings, research and reference
materials, grammar rules and usage, information distribution, and business etiquette. |
| Specific Course Requirements: |
| The student should follow the course syllabus, read both the online text and textbook, complete all assignments, take all textbook chapter tests, and take online tests. |

The Gregg Reference Manual is not a required textbook. It is recommended that students purchase this reference manual, if you do not have an office reference manual. The information is much broader and more intensive than the required textbook. The exam will cover in greater scope areas not covered in depth in the textbook. It is also recommended to have for your personal reference in your office as well. |

The grading scale reflects all student participation in group discussions, assignments, punctuality in completion of assignments and tests, and tests. |

| Assignments and Projects: |
| Assignments are listed in the Assignment Section of this course. Assignments should be completed by the date due on the assignment. Some of your assignments will be group discussions and other assignments will be individual projects to be completed. |
| Class Participation: |
| A statement that students must participate in all interactive aspects of the course if interaction is part of the course design. For example, students must communicate with other students in the chat room, students are expected to communicate with the instructor as a learning resource, students must check the course bulletin board frequently for announcements, and students must actively participate in threaded discussion events. |
| Punctuality: |
|
Assignments should be completed by the due date. Late assignments will be accepted but it will be noted of tardiness. As an administrative professional, completion of work in a timely manner is an important aspect of a successful professional in the office. This class is an extension of the office environment. One endeavoring to enhance their career opportunities and growth so your class assignments should be treated as one would treat any office assignment. |
| Course Ground Rules |

A reiteration and emphasis of certain rules and course expectations. For example, participation is required, expected to communicate with other students in team projects, learn how to navigate in WebCT Vista, keep abreast of course announcements , use the assigned college or university e-mail address as opposed a personal e-mail address, address technical problems immediately, and observe course netiquette at all times. |

- Always include a subject line.
- Remember, without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your emails. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases.
- Use standard fonts.
- Do not send large attachments without permission.
- Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc., should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication.
- Respect the privacy of other class members.

| Discussion Groups: |
- Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant.
- Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic.
- Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other's ideas.
- Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks.
- Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks.
- Be positive and constructive in group discussions.
- Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.
