Tennessee’s community colleges use technology to change their approach to developmental reading and math.

Article Summary

The "Redesigning the Basics" article by Kay Mills appeared in the May 2010 edition of National CrossTalk, a publication of the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. The article highlights the successes achieved by TBR institutions with support from the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT). Redesigns of developmental math and reading courses were responsible for improved course completion rates, school retention rates and financial savings. The course redevelopments used technology to focus attention on the skills students need for college-level courses and lets them move at their own pace instead of in lockstep with classmates. The article focuses on successes achieved at Cleveland State Community College, Northeast State Community College and Jackson State Community College.
