Course Information
 

Course Description:

The focus of this course is on advanced nursing and healthcare management of children and adolescents. Course content includes developmental, physiological, pathological, and psychosocial changes relative to health maintenance, acute and chronic illnesses, and developmental transitions within the family context. 

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Assess the development and health status of children and adolescents;
  2. Develop advanced nursing plans of care to manage the delivery of health care to children and adolescents in diverse settings;
  3. Apply knowledge from nursing and related disciplines in the formulation of diagnoses and intervention strategies used to promote health and manage acute and chronic health alterations in children and adolescents;
  4. Integrate research findings into the management of child and adolescent health concerns;
  5. Analyze the family system to identify factors that influence the health of the child and adolescent;
  6. Analyze existing protocols using established standards of care for intervention in acute and chronic health alterations in children and adolescents; and
  7. Relate the role and scope of practice of the family nurse practitioner to health care of children and adolescents.

Prerequisites: NURS 5101/5102 Advanced Health Assessment; NURS 5101/5102 Advanced Health Assessment; NURS 5103 Advanced Pathophysiology; NURS5104 Advanced Pharmacology

There are quizzes, a midterm and a comprehensive final in this course.

Late Assignments:

Late assignment will receive a 10% grade reduction for each day or portion of a day that the assignment is late. Central standard time will be used as the standard in this course.

Assignments and Participation
 
Assignments and Projects:
The requirements for all assignments are detailed under "Evaluation Tools" in the Course Menu.  All assignments must be submitted to the Assignment Dropbox unless otherwise indicated. Other assignments may include the Reflection and Analysis Paper, Discussion Board (Participation and Leadership Component), Module Assignments, Quizzes, Midterm, and Final Examination. See Calendar for dates due.     
Class Participation:
Students are expected to participate in all interactive aspects of the course. Students should check the course bulletin board at least twice a week for any announcements and ongoing discussions.
Punctuality:
A statement of course milestones to keep the students on track in an asynchronous environment.

  • Keep abreast of course announcements
  • Use WebCT for all communication UNLESS problems occur with online delivery of the WebCT course

Email:
  • Always include a subject line.
  • Remember without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your emails. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases.
  • Use standard fonts.
  • Do not send large attachments without permission.
  • Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc. should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication.
  • Respect the privacy of other class members
Discussion Groups:
  • Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant.
  • Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic.
  • Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other’s ideas.
  • Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks.
  • Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks.
  • Be positive and constructive in group discussions.
  • Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.

  • Introduce yourself to the other learners in the chat session.
