Message from the Instructor – An instructor specific message to the students introducting them to the instructor of the course. Instructors may wish to introduce themselves including educational, discipline-related and personal background information, if desired. This message tends to be much more personal than the generic course welcome message which is on the course home page. This page could also include a personal photograph, audio message or link to a video message from the instructor. This could be as small as one paragraph.
Instructor Information – This page will have the instructors name, office address, office phone number, instructor related e-mail address and a webpage. Vita related information can also be included on the page if desired. Personal biographical or vita-related information could also be included on this page or built into the Message from the Instructor on the prior link, A template for this information is provided in the Getting Started Module.
The D2L e-mail tool should be the primary e-mail communication used in RODP couses, however, all RODP instructors are required to provide a secondary e-mail address which is outside of D2L so that students can contact you should there be problems within D2L. Instructors should inform students that the secondary e-mail should only be used if D2L is not working, and as a general guideline instructors should not accept e-mail from RODP students to their secondary e-mail unless D2L is not workng.
Review Course Expectations – A list of course expectations should be inlcuded within this link. While this page might duplicate some information which is found in the course syllabus, information on this page will include information you might relay to a student if they were sitting in your office and you had to tell them what they have to do to succeed in your course. This information can be in paragraph or bulleted format. Expections might include:
- What steps the student should do first. Give students explicit and detailed instructions of how to start in your class. What do you want them to do first? Then tell them.
- How much time do you expect them to spend each week on the course? 12-15 hours per week is recommended.
- Tell the students to be sure to complete all assessments (assignments and quizzes) on time. The Desire2Learn/eLearn software has the ability to stop students from submitting assignments or taking quizzes, if you have enabled theses capabilities. If you have enabled restricted availability or assignments deadlines, tell your students now.
- Describe the layout of the course.
- How many modules
- How many quizzes, exams or tests
- Any papers? How many, how long, required style?
- Is there a participation requirement? Describe it.
- What components make up each module.
- Tell the students to be sure to contact you regarding any uncertainties, questions or problems they have with your course.
