| Course Information |
| Course Description: |
Payroll accounting is required for all students obtaining an Accounting Assistant Diploma. This payroll course is
comprehensive and you will learn a valuable skill. Most of your work will be done manually but at the end of the book,
for the final, you will prepare an automated payroll for several payroll periods. You are fortunate to get the opportunity
to learn payroll: most two and four year colleges and universities do not teach payroll as in-depth course such as this course.
|
| Course Objectives: |
- Basic payroll procedures
- Computing and paying wages and salaries
- Security Taxes (FICA) and Federal Income Taxes.
- Unemployment Compensation Taxes
- Analyzing and journalizing payroll transactions
- Computerized Payroll
|
| Prerequisites and Co-requisites: |
Orientation to Online Classes (a six hour class offered at no charge through RODP). You should be familiar
with basic Windows navigation and file management. You should know how to attach files and open files
through your word processor, and scan files into your computer.
|
| Course Topics: |
Most of your problems can be done in your book but if you need to work out the problems in a notebook, that is great.
There are Series A and B problems, but I only assign Series A. You are welcome to do all the problem in all chapters for
added practice. I can email check figures for Series B problems. The more detail you develop the more you will understand
the entire payroll process. Every chapter builds on the next, so learn each chapter thoroughly before you try to go to the next
chapter.
There are answers to all the self-study quizzes and check figures to problem in back of your book. You can check your answers
and make sure you are learning important concepts for each chapter. Self-study quizzes throughout each chapter will give you a
simple exercise on techniques you just read and practice on the calculation. Do each self-study quiz in each chapter and the assigned
end-of-the-chapter problems.
There are seven chapters in this book. Chapter one is information, theory, and terminology. Chapters two through six are payroll
concepts you will learn and are very important. Chapter seven/Appendix A is your final.
At the end of each chapter, there is a continuing payroll problem. This problem will concentrate on the new concepts you will
learn in the chapter. Be sure you do the continuing payroll problem after you have completed the assigned homework problems
and checked your answers.
Your final is a computerized problem. This is very helpful and is very much real life.
