Course Description: |
Business Procedures II is required for all administrative assistant majors. This couse is basic accounting and will carry you through ten chapters of accounting and six chapters of Peachtree, an automated accounting program. Accounting is no longer done manually, but you must understand the steps of manual accounting to understand automated accounting.

Course Objectives: |
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of accounting.
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the elements of accounting - assets, liabilities, and owner's equity.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of expenses and revenue.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of T-Accounts.
5. Demonstrate an understanding of accounting forms.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the accounting cycle..
7. Demonstrate an understading of the preparation of financial statements..
8. Complete a manual or computerized practice set.
9. Demonstrate an understanding of terminology related to automated accounting careers and of the career opportunities available..
10. Demonstrate an understanding of basic automated accounting terminology, concepts, and procedures for a service and merchandising business.
11.Complete the accounting cycle utilizing a current accounting software package .

Prerequisites and Co-requisites: |
Orientation to Online Classes (a six hour class offered at no charge through RODP). You should be familiar with basic Windows navigation and file management. You should know how to attach files and open files through your word processor, and scan files into your computer.

Course Topics: |
There are working papers for EVERY exercise and problem. The papers you will use all begin with a WP. Do not do your homework on anything but your working papers. You will save time and brain cells by using formats already set for you.
You will want to add the student book site http://heintz.swlearning.com to your favorites list because you will need to do practice quizzes and get additional learning resources from this site. It is a good idea to add the WEB-CT website to your favorites list too.
After you read each chapter: Go to the student website, before you take the timed test in WEB-CT, and take the interactive quiz. Have your results sent to me at DSelby@Jackson.tec.tn.us. You will not get a grade on these quizzes, but they are mandatory. I will use these grades to determine class participation and effort.

You will begin using PeachTree to work many of the problems from now on. Manual accounting is never done anymore, but you need to understand the manual process to understand what goes on inside a computerized system. There is a PEACH next to the problems you can do in Peachtree. Install your CD that is included in your workbook for Peachtree.

Assessment and Grading |
Testing Procedures:

Most of your tests will be through WEB-CT. You are required to complete one Comprehensive Practice Set and mail or scan it to me.

Grading:
Chapter tests 20% (There is a test after every chapter)
Class participation: 10% (Discussion and 10 chapter quizzzes using the book's student website)
Mid-term after lesson 6 – 35%
Final after lesson 10 - 35%
Participation is expected and may be used to bump up your grade if you are on the bubble between grades.

Class Participation:

Students are expected to use WEB-CT email to communicate with the instructor, share ideas and concerns about assignments, and email documents, as attachments, to the instructor.

Punctuality:

Students are permitted to work ahead of the time-line in this course. You must adhere to the minimum completion time-line to finish this course as required by the end of the trimester.

Course Ground Rules
|
- Students must complete the RODP Orientation course to become familiar with Windows and WebCT.
- Print the syllabus the first day of class.
- Print the "Getting Started" module
- Print the calendar the first day of class.
- Answer the instructor's Welcome messgae within the first three days of class.
- Post a brief biography of yourself within the first three days of class to let other students get to know you. Using the discussion board, respond to at least two other students. Possibly you read something interesting about them or have questions you would like to ask them. Get to know your classmates.
- Do not be afraid to ask questions. If you have a question about something, be sure other students have the same question. Use the discussion board to post questions to other students and the instructor.
- HAVE FUN, LEARN, DEVELOP THIS MUCH NEED SKILL.

Guidelines for Communications

- Always include a subject line.
- Remember without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your emails. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases.
- Use standard fonts.
- Do not send large attachments without permission.
- Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc. should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication.
- Respect the privacy of other class members

Discussion Groups:
|
- Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant.
- Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic.
- Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other’s ideas.
- Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks.
- Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks.
- Be positive and constructive in group discussions.
- Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.
