Course Information

Course Description:

Keyboarding and word processing are skills needed in most every position in today's marketplace. This course will begin with the most basic keyboarding training, demonstrate proper formatting of business letter and documents, and beginning word processing. This course is the prerequisite for Intermediate Document Processing (2nd trimester).

Required (NO EXCEPTIONS):

Microsoft Word 2003 (needed after lesson 20) (Available through the RODP Bookstore for $79.95)
Greggs Keyboarding and Document Processing: ISBN: 0-07-313848-7 (Kit 3)

Course Objectives:

1. Identify computer system components.
2. Demonstrate proper care of equipment and disks.
3. Demonstrate proper keyboarding techniques.
4. Demonstrate an acceptable level of keyboarding skills.
5. Proofread and edit copy.
6. Apply keyboarding skills to create basic business documents.
7. Demonstrate a working knowledge of software.
8. Format and produce a variety of simple and complex business documents using word processing software and various input devices.
9. Compose and apply written communications skills at the keyboard.
10. Apply mail-ability standards to document production.

Prerequisites and Co-requisites:

Orientation to Online Classes (a six hour class offered at no charge through RODP). You should be familiar with basic Windows navigation and file management.

Course Topics:

Install the Distance Learning CD that came with your kit. Read the “Getting Started Page”.
Go through the tutorial to familiarize yourself with Gregg College Keyboarding and Document Processing.
Look through the front portion of your spiral, black book to see the reference material available.

Lessons 1-20 The Alphabet, Number, and Symbol Keys
There are no grades for the first 20 lessons as this is teaching the keyboard and technique.
I suggest at lesson 11, you cover your keyboard with a piece of paper so you cannot see the keys and are not tempted to look at your hands. If you are using a regular keyboard (not a laptop), paint the keys with black model paint to cover the keyboard (DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU ARE USING A LAPTOP)

Module 1: Read and print "Getting Started" and print your calendar.
Week 1 – Install software, go through GDP Tutorial, complete lessons 1 and 2.

Module 3 – Week 3 - Lessons 6, 7, and 8.

Module 4 – Week 4 - Lessons 9, 10, 11, and 12

Module 5 – Week 5 – Lessons 13, 14, 15, and 16

Module 6 – Week 6 – Lessons 17, 18, 19, and 20

After lesson 20 you will begin to get graded on your work.


Module 7 – Week 7 – Lessons 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25

Module 8 – Week 8 – Lessons 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30
Progress Check Report 30-10 (time limit 21 to 29 minutes, edit out all errors)

Module 9 – Week 9 – Lessons 31, 32, 33, 34, and 35
Progress Check Correspondence 35-19 (time limit - 11 to 19 minutes, edit out all errors)

Module 10 – Week 10 – Lessons 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 and Test 2.
Correspondence 40-20 (add envelope to letter)
Progress check 40-15 (time limit 7 to 15 minutes, edit out all errors)

Test 2-All errors must be edited out to get a grade. (Do not take alternate test)

Week 15 – You may use this week to play catch up, redo assignments you want to improve on, or just sit back and wait for your grades.  By this time, you have gained a great skill and you may want to go back to lesson 21 and redo some timings, since you have improved your speed and accuracy.  Remember, I take the best of your scores.

Specific Course Requirements:

Students will need to be motivated and self-directed, with the ability to follow instructions, use email, and follow a time-line.

Assessment and Grading

Testing Procedures:

College Keyboarding and Document Processing (GDP) is software used to teach, test, and grade keyboarding and word processing. Throughout the modules you will be graded at various progress checks and testing points.

Grading Procedure:

Your grade will be based on Skills (Tests) (50%), Related Work (Progress Checks) (25%), Timed Writings from book 25%, Custom Timed Writings 10%

SKILLS SCORE:

Timed Writings, Progress checks, and Tests are administered throughout your modules as follows: There are time limits on all progress checks and tests. You must edit out ALL errors or your work will not be graded. Your time accumulates as you create the documents and increases each time you edit the documents. You must make at least a C (77) on all Progress Checks and Tests or you will be asked to re-do the progress check and/or test.

Timings: Lesson 20 through lesson 40 (Two errors are acceptable)
A =41+wpm
B= 37-40 wpm
C= 32-36 wpm

Timings: Lessons 41 through lesson 60 (Two errors are acceptable)
A+ =45
B = 41-44
C = 37-40

Participation is expected and may be used to bump up your grade if you are on the bubble between grades.

93-100---A
85-92----B
77-84----C

A score of 77 or better must be achieved to receive credit for this course.

Class Participation:

Students are expected to use WEB-CT email to communicate with the instructor, share ideas and concerns about assignments, and email documents, as attachments, to the instructor.

Punctuality:

Students are permitted to work ahead of the time-line in this course. You must adhere to the minimum completion time-line to finish this course as required by the end of the trimester.

Course Ground Rules

  • Students must complete the RODP Orientation course to become familiar with Windows and WebCT.
  • Print the syllabus the first day of class.
  • Print the "Getting Started" module
  • Print the calendar the first day of class.
  • Email the instructor within the first three days of class.
  • Post a brief biography of yourself within the first three days of class to let other students get to know you. Using the discussion board, respond to at least two other students. Possibly you read something interesting about them or have questions you would like to ask them. Get to know your classmates.
  • Do not be afraid to ask questions. If you have a question about something, be sure other students have the same question. Use the discussion board to post questions to other students and the instructor.
  • HAVE FUN, LEARN, DEVELOP THIS MUCH NEED SKILL.

Guidelines for Communications

Email:

  • Always include a subject line.
  • Remember without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your emails. Use of emoticons might be helpful in some cases.
  • Use standard fonts.
  • Do not send large attachments without permission.
  • Special formatting such as centering, audio messages, tables, html, etc. should be avoided unless necessary to complete an assignment or other communication.
  • Respect the privacy of other class members

Discussion Groups:

  • Review the discussion threads thoroughly before entering the discussion. Be a lurker then a discussant.
  • Try to maintain threads by using the "Reply" button rather starting a new topic.
  • Do not make insulting or inflammatory statements to other members of the discussion group. Be respectful of other’s ideas.
  • Be patient and read the comments of other group members thoroughly before entering your remarks.
  • Be cooperative with group leaders in completing assigned tasks.
  • Be positive and constructive in group discussions.
  • Respond in a thoughtful and timely manner.

Chat:

  • Introduce yourself to the other learners in the chat session.
  • Be polite. Choose your words carefully. Do not use derogatory statements.
  • Be concise in responding to others in the chat session.
  • Be prepared to open the chat session at the scheduled time.
  • Be constructive in your comments and suggestion
