| Course description: | This course addresses the areas of child and adolescent psychological development. The focus is on the science of individual human development. In addition, infant development is covered briefly to provide an understanding of the sequential and hierarchical nature of development. The majority of assignments will deal with children in the kindergarten to eighth grade. However, early childhood and teen assignments will be included to understand the precursors and aftereffects childhood and middle childhood. The course emphasizes an understanding of the important methods, terms, theories, and findings in the field of developmental psychology. The primary focus of the class is the cognitive, socio-emotional and physical changes associated with child and adolescent development. The course is organized in a topical format, exploring the basic theories and tracing development across the preadult years for each psychological topic covered. The course requires both independent reading, interaction with online modules, field observations and Berk’s text. It is strongly recommended that you have passed an introductory Developmental Psychology course before taking this class. |

| Course goals: | Learn and gain mastery over the basic facts and research findings, terminology, principles, and theories important in the various areas of developmental psychology. Develop understanding, skills, and techniques for analyzing human behavior. • Gain a basic understanding of the interaction between genetic and environmental influences on human development. • Gain a basic understanding of cognitive and social development across the childhood and adolescence. • Gain a basic understanding of family, school and work achievement, and death and dying as they apply to child and adolescent development. knowledge of learning and child development theories and their impact on students as intellectual, social, emotional, cultural, and literate being. |

| Introduction: | Students will be required to take four unit examinations each worth 100 points. Dates when exams will be available are listed in the calendar section. Remember that each exam will be available for a short period. At the end of the exam or assignment period the you will be locked out. If you require a specific accommodation, please e-mail and or call the instructor. The four exams will be used to determine part of your overall grade in the course. The tests are available for 72 hours in case of any technical difficulties. However, I encourage you to take it as early as possible in the time slot. The times posted on the calendar are Central Timezone. Therefore please adjust your submission time if you are in the Eastern timezone.I will be notified by the computer center if Web CT is down or not accessible. Cheating on exams and assignments will result in a grade of "F" in the course. Cheating in this class means giving or receiving content not technical help on an exam or assignment. It is desireable to help your webmates on access or navigational problems. I encourage individulas with web expertise to help their less skilled classmates. |

| information: | The course will cover sixteen chapters addressing various factors related to child development. There will be four unit exams and one comprehensive final. All exams will be in the multiple choice format. You will be given approximately one minute to answer each question. The questions will be presented online one at a time with no ability to go back to previous items. You will be allowed to retake exams after a 24 hour study break. The average of your two attempts will be your exam grade. Seventy two hours will be allotted for each examination period. This is very important since if you wait till the last release day you will forfeit the ability to retake the test due to the 24 hour study requirement. |
